Questions and Answers

Does my massage need to hurt to be effective?

No. Absolutely not. This is a very common misconception. In order to deliver an effective massage, technique is vital and pain is not always necessary.

You can receive many benefits from a relaxation massage (which doesn't hurt at all.) Some techniques, like myofascial release and cupping can be uncomfortable at times, but helpful for many physical situations.

It is all about communication between the therapist and the client. A pressure scale will be given at the beginning of a session and will be checked with you throughout the session.

Please don't be afraid to ask for more or less pressure at any point during the massage.

Do I have to get completely naked to receive a massage?

Some people are comfortable to go under the sheets in their birthday suit, others wear underwear, shorts, socks, or their regular clothes.

You will not be asked to take of more clothes than you are comfortable with. Please communicate your comfort levels.

Note that wearing lots of clothes may interfere with the therapists use of certain techniques. However, we can still adapt and deliver a good massage.

Is it normal to get a headache after a massage?

Yes. Headaches can occur after a massage. Massages stimulate circulation (get your blood flowing) which can cause a headache. A headache can also occur from being in the headrest uncomfortably. Please communicate to the therapist so that adjustments can be made.

After a massage you will need to rehydrate, please drink some water before you leave and after the session.

What if I am ticklish?

Some people have ticklish feet, back, legs and/or anywhere else, and that is ok!

Communicate this at the beginning of the session and we can adjust accordingly. Using a firmer pressure with a broad stroke can minimise tickles. If you are too ticklish we can simply skip that part of the body and move on to a less sensitive area - no problem!

At the end of the day, this is your massage!

Does massage always include oil, wax or essential oils?

No not always. In many instances oil or wax is used to lubricate an area for different techniques and pressure.

However, there are many techniques in which oil or wax is not needed. This is all dependent on each individual client. You will be told of any wax, oil, or essential oils that are used before the session.

Please alert the therapist to any allergies.

Is it ok if I fall asleep on the table?

Yes, this can be seen as more of a compliment of trust than anything else and it doesn't effect your session or massage therapist.

What if I feel self-conscious?

Being self-conscious shouldn't prevent you from seeking a massage. A professional massage therapist will be non-judgemental and will focus on your needs, muscles, and wellbeing. Even so, here are some common concerns clients have...

- Acne (back or anywhere else)
- Believing they are overweight
- Thinking they have ugly feet or nails
- Self conscious scars
- Hairy legs

Please communicate any of your concerns to the massage therapist, this is a safe space. If your legs are shaved or not (or any other insecurities) this is of no concern to the therapist I promise! There are no surprises, all is confidential.

What if I get an erection during a massage?

This rarely occurs, but if it does, don't panic. Sometimes it happens as a result of your nervous system going into relaxation mode. Therapists know this is a physiological reaction and will treat the situation accordingly.

Usually the therapist will try to redirect your attention with a shift in the focus of their work, by altering pressure, using a thick blanket or moving to a different area of the body. This is nothing new to the therapist so please do not feel embarrassed.
